ORDER OF THE SPYGLASS

Field Logs

All entries recorded by hand first. Transcribed here second. Nothing is added in transcription. Nothing is cleaned up. Spelling errors in the original stay spelling errors here. The log is not the analysis. The log is the observation.

OVERLAND — BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, TX

Departed pre-dawn. Temperature already above 90°F at 0530. Drove the western approach. Chihuahuan desert floor — flat, pale, stretching. The kind of flat that makes you feel observed rather than observing.

First stop: Rio Grande overlook. Water lower than last documented visit. Noticeably lower. Recorded water line against rock marker. Three photographs, one drone pass at 120 feet. Wind from the south, variable, 10–15 knots. Drone handling nominal.

Midday: sheltered in vehicle. Instrument reading: 114°F ambient. Humidity 9%. Watch glass fogged when I breathed on it and cleared in under two seconds. Noted.

Unknown object flag 1: Rock formation on northeast trail face. Regularity inconsistent with natural fracture pattern. Three photographs. Will examine against geological survey maps. Not claiming anything. Flagged for return.

Evening: temperature dropped to 81°F at 2100. First stars visible by 2030. Orion rising east-southeast. Logged. Coyote vocalizations from the northeast at approximately 2145. Two animals minimum, possibly four.

Field note: water consumption 5.5L today. Appropriate for conditions. No adverse health effects. Feet good. Morale high. The desert does not care whether you are prepared. It simply proceeds.
